Just an old USS "target" signal guarding a section of railroad somewhere in central Wyoming.

I really love painting railroad crossing gates, I think because they are ubiquitous, usually unnoticed and have wonderfully geometric shapes. There is also almost a code to reading images of them; subtle changes over the years pin the timeless archetype to a specific era. This one is from Northampton, Massachusetts in the late 1950's or early 60's.

Is this a political painting? Of course not; it’s just a landscape. Just a landscape of the spot in Wyoming where American citizens of Japanese heritage were unloaded from trains that had taken them from their homes, often with as little as 24 hours’ notice, to live in barracks in remote corners of the west, during World War II. We did not trust them to be loyal citizens. Interestingly, there were no such barracks for German Americans. I worked on this for a little more than two years and it never got any cheerier.
