Cobra Oil and encaustic
2021
9x12 Cobra oil and encaustic of a small barn in San Juan Capistrano, CA. Surrounded by new construction, in 2016 it was a humble reminder of an agrarian past. By 2018, it was demolished and an anodyne condo or some such foolishness had taken its place.
The underpainting is in Cobra oils, followed by encaustic, with additional Cobra glazes on top. The encaustic allows light, or the play of light, to suffuse the piece. I liked the idea of late-afternoon light hitting the structure, implying impending twilight, yet giving the building an almost holy glow.
