Fundamental Oil Painting Techniques
In this tutorial, we will introduce you to 4 fundamental techniques of oil painting.
This tutorial will cover:
• 1:15 Blocking-in technique
• 1:31 Glazing technique
• 1:55 Scumble technique
• 2:16 Pallet knife impasto technique
The first technique in this video will show you how to use the blocking-in technique in oil painting. For the glazing technique mix the paint with some Talens glazing medium. This will result in a thin semi-transparent color. This is applied over a layer of paint that has been allowed to dry. The basics of the glazing technique is to gradually build up layers of transparent glazed colors. Scumbling is the technique of applying a very thin amount of color, generally undiluted with medium, using a stiff brush. This results in a textured effect. Palette knife painting and impasto painting is a method used to apply paint in a thick broad fashion using a palette knife. The palette knife strokes are obvious and add texture and a feeling of dimension to the paint. Experiment with different sizes of knives and different types of marks.
