Started in 1974 by David van Berckel, Opus Art Supplies has been an integral part of the visual arts community in British Columbia for the past 45 years. From its humble roots as a wholesale framing company in Vancouver, Opus has grown to include 7 retail locations, a national mail order service, and an online store. As the times have changed, Opus as a business has followed suit, and has continued to be an ever evolving creative resource.
At Opus, we pride ourselves on our friendly and knowledgeable staff who offer an amazing customer service experience, genuine enthusiasm for the visual arts and art supplies, and our ability to be a resource for the creative people in our community. Offering low-cost workshops, free visiting artist demonstrations, community events, an online video library to inspire, educate and instruct the curious and creative, along with an extensive selection of art supplies, we’re often told by artists that a visit to Opus makes them feel like a kid in a candy store.
For the past several years, Royal Talens has been a generous sponsor of our largest annual community event. Believed to be Canada’s (and possibly North America’s) largest one-day outdoor painting event, the Opus Outdoor Painting Challenge draws upwards of 1,300 artists of all ages and abilities to come together in 7 communities across the province to bring their artmaking outdoors and share their enthusiasm with their neighbors. Paintings are made and exhibited all in one day, and sponsors’ prizes are randomly drawn for at the end of the day.
We love Royal Talens’ support of artists and the visual arts, and were thrilled to be able to offer a special event movie screening of Loving Vincent for our customers in a local Vancouver theatre a couple of years ago. Opus has been a long-time customer of Royal Talens – Rembrandt Pastels have consistently been our top-selling pastel line for almost 20 years! We are also very excited to be bringing in the new Van Gogh Watercolour Pans as they will be a great addition to our Van Gogh selection.
